Nano-sized particles can cross cellular membranes by nonphagocytic mechanisms, which may facilitate their access to sites within cells and tissues which are not routinely encountered, further contributing to uncertainty surrounding their toxic potential. In this context, proteins adsorbed onto the surface of intravenously administered particles, liposomes and variety of drug delivery agents often play a decisive role in governing disposition. Therefore, knowledge about the composition of the protein adsorption patterns and their controlled modification can be exploited to enrich nanocarriers in certain cells.
